A vignette from 'Beth' in The Lies We Live...
Beth pursed her lips and gave Steph an appraising stare from across the table. She let out a heavy sigh, “Alright, I’m not sure where to begin… My husband and I have been married for thirty-two years, and… I love him…”
Steph’s eyebrows shot up, but she stayed silent and nodded her head in encouragement. Where’s she going with this?
Beth frowned and sat up a little straighter, “Well, of course, I love him. Obviously. You don’t stay married for thirty-two years if you don’t love each other, right?”
“Right,” Steph echoed back, waiting patiently for her guest to continue.
Beth started rubbing her temples in little circles and let out a shaky breath, “Maybe this isn’t the way I should start.”
“Would it help if I asked you questions to get you started?”
She looked up at Steph and nodded. She put her hands back down on the table, “Sure, we could try that.”
