A VIGNETTE FROM 'HOPE' IN THE LIES WE LIVE...
Hope shook her head, “It’d been a long time… Maybe twenty years? Almost thirty years?”
“That’s a long time! That’s incredible you were able to recognize him.”
“It was,” Hope agreed. Her fingers were tapping the tabletop again, “Ahh, I think… I think the last time I saw him, it was the summer after my first year of college – I agreed to meet him for lunch, and of course, it ended up being a huge mistake.”
“What went wrong?”
“Oh, what else? We started snapping at each other over the same old arguments; nothing new. My mom said we’re probably too much alike, both too stubborn. That’s rich, coming from her. Anyway, that’s the last I heard from him,” Hope said, frowning. “Oh yeah, and how could I forget – he’d had a few too many drinks during lunch and was belligerent and angry. After that day, I washed my hands of the whole mess. I decided I didn’t have room in my life for that kind of crap and I moved on.”
