A VIGNETTE FROM 'MARA' IN THE LIES WE LIVE
“Will they be there for the holidays, too?”
“Oh, yeah. I’m the only one who moved away.” Mara said. “Normally in our family, you go to college and come right back home. For me, I went to college, then moved out of state. That didn’t sit well with my mom, especially after Dad passed away. I was supposed to come back home, and I never did.”
“But you at least go out there every holiday season, right?”
“Yeah, and we have a great time… once we get past the first hour of listening to how I should have moved back home and married my high school sweetheart, who, by the way, is currently sitting in prison for embezzlement…”
“Did they stop pestering you about it when he went to prison, at least?”
“You would think so, but no,” Mara laughed again.
“She wants you to be married to a felon?”
“No, her argument now is if I had moved back and married him, he wouldn’t have fallen into a life of crime – he’d be an upstanding married man with responsibilities.”
“Eh… I think you dodged a bullet there,” Steph nodded.
“I think so, too.”
